I did not know this at the time, but WoW - Blizzard's main source of revenue - is actually declining in number of users since Cataclysm came out. Most US Servers have "medium" number of population. I had thought it would have ended by 2012. (Hint: if the UEIR bought it, I could have a personal server; though the lack of players indicates why the player in-game Auction Houses are on the decline of buyers/sellers).
